DISD ( Dallas Independent School District ) has had free lunch for as long as i can remember. Free breakfast too. On school holidays you can still goto school and get a meal. I want to say they do this on weekends too. Granted, MREs from an Army surplus store are better than school lunch but it is free. I don't think my kids have ever eaten a school lunch.
During COVID my wife and I got a EBT (food stamps) card in the mail from the school district with like $2,000 on it for food. It was basically the dollars spent on school lunch for the time the kids were not in school.
- kerkeslager 1y agoWow that's amazing. I'm glad to hear they're doing it at least somewhat right somewhere.
- throwaway2037 1y ago> I don't think my kids have ever eaten a school lunch. I am confused why it was important to include this sentence in your post. Overall: Excellent. This sentence: Not required. Is this a flex?
- imp0cat 1y agoIt's just a way to indirectly say that the school food was not awesome.
- chasd00 1y agofunny thing, i actually thought about that sentence a lot. I added it in after writing the rest of the post because i felt bad implying I subject my kids to school food. I wasn't intending that as a "flex" but just that the food is really bad. On the other hand, i understand not all families have that option so maybe it is a flex in an unintended way.
- Lanzaa 1y agoYou may not have intended it as a "flex", but you are teaching your children to be snooty. If they have "never" eaten a school lunch, they have judged the lunches based on appearance rather than substance/flavor. I wonder how you have judged the school lunches to be lesser than MREs, perhaps you tried the lunches before your children.
