Nice idea, but there is a small problem.
There are probably tens of thousand (if not more) of third-party applications for Linux-like systems, and hundreds of distributions, making new releases twice a year. This multiplies to 10 000 × 100 × 2 = 2 000 000 ports per year.
Who is going to write 2 million ports per year, thoroughly test it and fix the compatibility bugs?
