Trading stuff for money: Like kidneys or blood or babies
- toomuchtodo 1y agoSomething not mentioned: people who don't want babies, but are uncompensated for forgoing that choice. That has value they are not being compensated for.
- 4ndrewl 1y agoThey get pensions paid for by economic activity of the next generation, so they're already compensated.
- toomuchtodo 1y agoPensions they paid into already over a lifetime of work? So they’re supposed to pay those contributions and have kids (while contributing ~two decades of uncompensated labor per child for more taxpayers to squeeze)? Ponzi gonna ponzi I suppose.
- 4ndrewl 1y agoI mean those pensions are typically invested in vehicles that provide growth to keep up with inflation etc, and that growth is largely powered by the workforce who by the time you retire are your kids. Or in your case other people's kids I guess?
- toomuchtodo 1y agoDoes that sound sustainable in a world of low or no growth with total fertility rates rapidly declining? https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/dependency-and-depopulation-confronting-the-consequences-of-a-new-demographic-reality https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/dependency-and-dep... https://www.cato.org/cato-journal/spring/summer-2018/demographics-their-implications-economy-policy#demographic-implications-for-economic-growth https://www.cato.org/cato-journal/spring/summer-2018/demogra... https://www.cato.org/cato-journal/spring/summer-2018/demographics-their-implications-economy-policy#conclusion https://www.cato.org/cato-journal/spring/summer-2018/demogra... https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/children-born-per-woman https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/children-born-per-woman
