I live in a condo and share a roof, walls, and driveways with my neighbors so an HOA or something like it is probably required. I am thankful that my HOA board is mostly hands-off, and many of the more petty rules are not enforced. If I had to buy a standalone home, I would probably have to pay considerably more and live in a worse part of the neighborhood.
