It is a liberal value/value that curious people hold to take people they disagree with in good faith and treat what they say as true/treat it as if they honestly believe what they are saying. Unfortunately, once someone proves themselves to be bad faith there is a responsibility to no longer do that. Unfortunately, doing that directly results in conflict and the possibility of losing, which explains the general state of reality -- "the good guys" avoiding necessary conflict.
