I thought I read somewhere that because of the neuroplasticity reduction in the brain as you age, that as people get older they are less accepting of change and trend towards conservatism. I can't find a good article to back that up with, though, so ymmv. My own anecdotal evidence is that people believe what their news sources say more than they actually crunch numbers, so because of the polarization of news along political party lines people are going to believe whatever they see or read.
