Spoiler: Neuroinflammation is suffering. An individual animal’s recognition of its own social defeat increases inflammation. Aggressive behavior and “winning” are anti-inflammatory. The paper puts it beautifully. (In a stark way.)
Neuroinflammation is behavior-modifying, and also brain-modifying.
A stressed, inflamed brain region is maybe not going to be making as many new connections; It is going to be a little wizened maybe?
