  'sex' has always referred to a biological concept, there is nothing to dispute there. The disagreements typically only begin when people misappropriate the nominal meaning of 'gender', a sociological concept derived from the Latin generare and etymologically distinct from 'sex'. Because people insist on ignoring simple definitions to wage culture war, we breed an ignorance cemented by perceived animosity. Orwell should have picked up on this; if he wanted people to say 2+2=5 then all he had to do is convince them that 4 is a queer number.
