Teaching keeps you young, or so says Professor Brian Kernighan
- vunderba 2y agoFrom the article: > In my class last fall, I told students that they could use generative AI to get a better understanding of what was going on. They could not use it on problem sets. It was crystal clear that people used it on problem sets anyway because they would turn in assignments that would have been too sophisticated for a 126 student." Reminds me of that clip from "The Critic" where Americans can purchase guns from a vending machine but first have to answer NO to the question "Are you a criminal?" https://imgur.com/a/gfOmddR https://imgur.com/a/gfOmddR And coincidentally also when people were saying that vibe coding was strictly intended for prototyping / experimenting and not for production. Uh huh, sure buddy, and I have a bridge to sell you. On a more positive note, Brian Kernighan comes across in the interview as exactly the kind of teacher you'd want to have - super genuine and passionate about imparting knowledge to his students.
- jkmcf 2y agoanswer NO to the question "Are you a criminal?" Unis have an honor code, right? This was clearly a FAFO situation.
- instagib 2y agoI recognized his name from the book he co-authored: The C Programming Language https://wikipedia.org/wiki/The_C_Programming_Language https://wikipedia.org/wiki/The_C_Programming_Language

- Tokumei-no-hito 2y agowhat is the title of this article from? he doesn't once say teaching keeps you young nor even allude to it. it's a 10 question interview that doesn't offer much at all.
- cafard 2y ago"Continuously learning new things helps keep you, well, maybe not young, but maybe not aging as fast." This is in response to the question, "What led you to start teaching at Princeton, and why did you decide to stay?" So I think that one could count "learning new things" as an aspect of teaching and justify the title.
- Tokumei-no-hito 2y agogood point. i suppose "the opposite of teaching keeps you, well, maybe not young, but maybe not aging as fast or so says professor" was too wordy a title
