Are Homes in Japan as Inexpensive as Advertised?

I've seen video after video of people visitng beautiful homes in Japan that cost under $150k and sometimes under $50k! Is it really that cheap to buy a home in Japan? Or is there a catch? I live in Southeast Asia and I'm considering taking a trip to some of the suburbs outside Tokyo to see for myself. Before I go though, is there anyone with familiarity buying a home in Japan or familiar with the process for a foreigner buying a home there?

Japanese population is shrinking. This is true for the country as a whole and for cities/towns outside of the major metro areas. Most of the homes for sale cheap are outside of the metro areas. As such there are more free homes then demand for them.
