Otherwise, if it really doesn't work as a business, I wouldn't try to monetize it. Unless I misunderstood your post, there is no need to. From a personal perspective, I prefer writing Free Software, in both senses of the word. From a "I want money" perspective, contributing to Free Software in the past always resulted in better job opportunities to me.
