Yes. This happened to me in 2019 flying from Minneapolis to Denver with family when I forgot my wallet (stupid, I know). I was taken aside and someone from homeland security in DC called on their phone and asked me a handful of questions about my life. Like what the church across the street from my apartment was called (I didn't know!). They eventually let me through the security check. I was really worried the entire trip but on the return flight I didn't have to do it again. But that was completely unintentional. I'd never intentionally try to fly when I don't have the required ID.
