We need to get rid of the two party system. I'm not trying to excuse what I think was some particularly bad thinking on the part of folks supporting Trump, but at the same time, if you're mad at one party the only real option is to support the other party, and that creates terrible incentives.
- toomuchtodo 1y agoFor sure, but we’re bleeding out on the pavement at the moment, and are going to have to work within the two party system to prevent death in the short term.
- jfengel 1y agoI really don't think it will help to have more parties. In the end somebody gets elected President. Everyone else loses. You can have transferrable votes, but I'm really not convinced that will help as much as you hope. You walk into the chamber, you tick off your favorite candidate (from among hundreds or thousands). Do you throw your second choice as the Democrat/Republican you can tolerate best? If they win, will you really feel like your voice was heard? I believe the only way to get rid of the core problem is to fundamentally re-think representative democracy, and probably the whole structure of government. Which would be great, but it's not an easy task. You won't get there just by wishing away the two lead parties.
