People buy lottery tickets knowing very well they are almost certainly not going to win. But you never know. You might get rich. You buy the ticket is the prize is tempting enough. Likewise, you avoid a low probability risk when the outcome is bad enough.

- Juliate 2y agoThis is not really... what you expect it is, I think. There are more people killed in mass shootings in the USA every year than there have been people killed in attacks during Christmas in Europe, like, ever.

- Juliate 2y agoYes. And there's comparatively less incentive to go into the USA... where you have higher chances to get assaulted, even by CPB/ICE/police, or shot, by anyone, than anywhere in the EU. You may also not take the lottery ticket, and buy someone a drink.

- lawn 2y agoYou assume that being detained is the only thing you're thinking about. Not wanting to support the US for plunging the whole world into economic turmoil or not wanting to support a country speed running into fascism are other reasons.
- baxtr 2y agoTrue! Thanks for pointing this out. Was indeed assuming this.
