The debate is effectively between classical Liberalism, and authoritarianism/patromonialism/fascism. Forget what people called themselves: the peoples republic of North Korea certainly isn’t a republic. Socialist Left/Capitalist Right is an outdated dichotomy that is only in service of authoritarians.
