Wilhoit is essentially claiming conservatives are all narcissist, which I don’t think is the case. “Rules for thee, but not for me.” People with NPD have a sense of entitlement, which is a result of the in-group/out-group framework of themselves and others that their minds create to hide their damaged sense of self worth.
Wilhoit is kind of participating in the same in-group/out-group behavior, intellectually, by dismissing conservatism as just a bunch of narcissists, which itself is a very narcissistic thing to do.
- acdha 2y agoHe didn’t claim that they’re narcissists so it’s weird to criticize him for your misunderstanding. His observation is simply that there is a notable difference between condoned in-group and out-group behaviour, and that’s well established enough at this point.
- deepfriedchokes 2y agoMy point was the behavior he is describing is consistent with narcissistic personality disorder, so he’s calling them that in all but name.
- acdha 2y agoThe behaviour he described is not unique to narcissists.
- cratermoon 2y agoNotably, Wilhoit did not say "conservatives", he said "conservativism". His observation describes a philosophy in the abstract, and does not attribute motivation or intent to individuals.
