Bluesky isn't just another Twitter/X competitor. It fixes social media
- 1970-01-01 2y agoBluesky has fixed one of many issues of social media. Issues that still need a solution/fix: How it will be curated and moderated in the future. Is AI going to be doing all the work, or will mods with bias be hired? What about pushing back on authoritarian governments and censorship? Musk buying Twitter proved 'Springtime for Hitler' is a real threat scenario; As value grows, so will offers that it can't refuse.
- verdverm 2y agoLook into ATProto custom feeds (algorithms), labelers (moderation), and the "credible exit" (billionaire proofing)

- wolvesechoes 2y agoSocial media are the problem, so Bluesky doesn't fix anything, but perpetuates the main issue.
- 4ndrewl 2y agoUntil someone buys it.
- rsynnott 2y agoI mean, realistically, it took about 16 years for Twitter to become unbearable, and that was due to a particularly incompetent billionaire driving it into the ground. If Bluesky lasts 16 years, I’ll take that, and then move onto the next thing.
- jauntywundrkind 2y agoIt doesn't "fix" social media. It enables us all to shape and improve and direct our social media ongoingly. It prevents us from being bound to one path, one decision maker. It gives us the power to improve & debug & unbreak. But it's up to us to take that power, to use the possibility Bluesky allows. Jay has post talking about branching paths, how looking backwards we can see all the paths not taken, see how we've come down to the path we are on. But how the future branches outwards. Bluesky is the only network that has such branching open possibility. (I respect ActivityPub and others, but generally you need multiple accounts for different uses; each fed server tends to be of fixed predetermined purposes). https://bsky.app/profile/jay.bsky.team/post/3llnps6xnes2s https://bsky.app/profile/jay.bsky.team/post/3llnps6xnes2s
- mnky9800n 2y agoI think the issues with social Media stem from getting information fast and being able to react to it fast. This, above all else, makes them bad for my brain. It inhibits my time to sit and consider things. Because it’s always there with more information for me to consume. I’m not sure I get anything out of a deluge of random information.
- verdverm 2y agoATProtocol (the thing Bluesky is building that changes the social media game) enables anyone to create custom feeds (algorithms) and moderation services. Since I switched to my own custom feeds, I spend far less time on social media. I have a bunch of little topic "boxes", ordered chronologically, and can get caught up quickly without distraction. https://atproto.com https://atproto.com
- hooverd 2y agoSo feeds and labels (moderation) are actually Bluesky primitives and not part of atproto. Which is fine. The core atproto primatives are identity through a DID, auth through OAuth, and commits through a personal data server. Everything is an abstraction on top of that.
- verdverm 2y agothere are moderation primitives in the `com.atproto` namespace. Any app that builds custom lexicon will need to do their own moderation, which means adding some semantics on top of those primitives. Content, and thus feeds, are app specific. One could also build a feed that draws on multiple app content, though would likely need a similar frontend that can render content from multiple apps (i.e. something like a browser / search / recommendation)
