I think the truth is the future is emulation. In the unlikely event someone does manage to replace the assembler with something portable it would be somewhat ironic that RISC-V targets would start to be viable. I grew up on RISC OS, and even I'm mystified as to quite why it has persisted in some quarters for so long.
