- JumpCrisscross 2y agoNon sequitur. Those kids are not in America’s economic self interest. Just moral. (Our culture hasn’t values honour for a while.)
- breadwinner 2y agoThe American people, through their elected representatives in Congress, decided saving those kids' lives are in our moral interest. Then Elon Musk decided it isn't.

- jmye 2y agoThey did not. Had they, Congress would’ve done something, given it can legislate and owns the budget. Americans have widely voted for people who actually represent them - craven, shortsighted and mean - to go to Congress.
- breadwinner 2y agoCongress has allocated budget to USAID. Elon Musk decided not to spend it.
- actionfromafar 2y agoBut they are in America's economic self interest. These programs are for soft power as much as they are for humanitarian value. Contrary to what those people believe, China is more than willing to compete for goodwill in the developing world, and if we thought US efforts could be hamfisted and come with a dragon seed sometimes, well we're in for some nasty surprises.
