It's important to note that there isn't a monolithic "Satanism" and that LaVeyan Satanism, one of the more prominent sects of Satanism, doesn't worship (or believe in) Satan per se. I skimmed their bible a while back when somebody brought it to school to be edgy and it was more like a philosophical treatise with a bunch of spooky magic tacked onto the back end of it. It largely seemed to advocate a sort of hipster, spiritual Libertarianism [1] - the appellation of "Satanism" is something of an attention grab. From the article:
> Satanic Grotto members, who number several dozen, said they hold a variety of beliefs. Some are atheists, some use the group to protest harm they suffered as church members, and others see Satan as a symbol of independence.
Their site [2] makes them seem like a secular church type of organization:
> We are dedicated to improving our community through fellowship, religious expression, shared education, artistic projects and social activism.
This is all to say that the "Satanists" are more likely to be cultural contrarians than literal evil worshipers. I do not identify with either of the groups mentioned in the article but feel that it's important to point out that "Satanism" is usually not what it sounds like.
[1] A gross oversimplification on my part - see Wikipedia or otherwise for a more nuanced discussion
