Half of Americans never supported the European side of WW2, but only the war against the non-white Japanese. They resented being forced, not just to take sides, but to take what they saw as the wrong side, in the European war. They taught that resentment to their children, who taught it to their children, etc. The frantic, performative anti-"Communism" of the Cold War was an effort to get those people back on side, but it could never have worked. For them, the only America is the one in the time machine, which did not get involved in the European war.
