Another factor rarely discussed is that anyone in the US should check the sex offenders list when buying a home. It is not just the person on the list, it is also the home they were in. The home I purchased was on the list and I had to call the Sheriff to have it removed. The previous owner had a renter that was playing with teens. One of the inner doors is still partially broken from when they kicked it in. The risk of keeping your home on the list is that an unhinged activist or vigilante might decide to Molotov cocktail the home not realizing the person no longer resides there. That puts both the new occupants and the vigilante in harms way. That could potentially also make the county or state financially liable for damages.
Like anything else people are good at adding a thing to a list and too lazy to de-list a thing.
