That makes me think that this is simply a restructuring to get some extra investment from Tencent, who already own part of Ubisoft.
With that said though, the statement that they aim to "expand multiplayer offerings with increased frequency of content release, introduce free-to-play touchpoints, and integrate more social features" seems completely at odds with the claim that they also want to "drive further increases in quality of narrative solo experiences". In fact, I'm guessing it will be much more of the former at the expense of the latter.
- stubish 2y agoI think publishers all want the next GTA V, where the solo game is a gateway into the multiplayer cash cow. Unfortunately this generally means design choices that detract from solo play. Also, a multiplayer game that people keep playing for years means a lot of mind share, which means merchandise, movies & TV shows.
- araes 2y agoI think you're correct. Most of what Ubisoft released in the last cycle of releases seems like they're chasing after whatever it that seems "hype" currently. There's also a lot of looking in every direction simultaneously, without any real direction or objective about almost anything. Everything's shiny, everything envy worthy, and the results mostly polished turds. "It needs this, and this, and this, and ..." and it has nothing. Skull and Bones was stuck in development hell forever, and when it emerged out the other side, seems like all there was remaining was Sea of Thieves envy, with little of the actual charm of a game anybody actually cared about making. Avatar's review (although already vanished in year?!?) was pretty hilarious. "The Okayest Game of 2023" "little more ambitious than ‘Farcry with blue people’"
