Hellscape? Hyperbole?
- toomuchtodo 2y agoThe future will not be as good as the past, due to climate change, economics, demographics, and unrest, broadly speaking. I agree with John about the hellscape and regret for my own children in a "what have I done" sort of way.
- JohnFen 2y agoI don't intend it as hyperbole, it's genuinely what I think is happening. I think we're in for much darker times than most people expect. This is a newish thing for me. A decade or so ago, I was generally optimistic. I completely understand if people assess the near future differently, of course.
- franktankbank 2y agoIs this largely related to climate change or some equal admixture of things? Have you experienced hardship yourself or are experiencing it for the first time?
- JohnFen 2y agoIt's a confluence of a number of very serious problems, including climate change but certainly not solely that. In the near term, I don't even think climate change, as serious as it is, is our most urgent issue (although in the medium and longer terms, I think it is). Even then I would not have descended into outright pessimism except that, collectively speaking, we have not just given up on addressing these issues but are leaning into actions that are exacerbating them. > Have you experienced hardship yourself or are experiencing it for the first time? I have experienced plenty of personal hardship in my younger years, but not so much these days. My pessimism is not related to my personal circumstance, it's related to the world my children are inheriting. I don't have enough years left in my life for the future to be a pressing personal concern. My kids do.
