- yorwba 2y agoI assume you're hoping to help correct others' misconceptions by providing information they may not have been aware of. To do so effectively, you need to take into account that what resonates with you won't necessarily resonate with your audience. In particular, the average HN user will likely assign high credibility to RSF, and less to individual reporters, fellow HN users and people on other social media, in that order. The most important consequence of this is that by delegating all your supporting arguments to TikTok, you're actually detracting from your credibility! Some people won't click that link out of principle. By not restating the content of the video in your own words, you lost the opportunity to convince those people. I'm always willing to entertain the possibility that journalists reporting on a foreign country are making amateur mistakes, so I decided to overcome my seething hatred for TikTok and watched the video. Observations: - The presenter is super annoying in that typical TikTok style. (This is why I hate it!) - She uses short snippets from the documentary where it's hard to tell what the context is, and keeps talking over them on top of that. Of course that's part of what she criticizes about the original video, but two wrongs don't make a right. In a war of mediocre propaganda, everyone just becomes more convinced of what they already thought, but nobody switches sides. (Cf the sibling comment by 'thowaway7564902.) - The factory in question most likely did use child labor prohibited by European supply chain regulations. (Probably not the intended takeaway!) Yes, children helping out at their parents' workplace because there's nobody to look after them otherwise are prohibited, too. The European perspective on that is that either the government or the factory should be providing affordable childcare, and if that raises prices, the end consumer will gladly pay the difference. There's potentially a way to transform that TikTok video into something suitable for posting on HN, by: - Tracking down the original video material and providing timestamped links to it - Presenting counterarguments in text form directly in the comment itself If that sounds like a lot of work compared to linking to TikTok (because it is!), you'll have to live with the fact that someone is wrong on the internet. https://xkcd.com/386/ https://xkcd.com/386/
- chin2chang 2y agoThis is HN, very anti-china. I post text summary comment, it was downvoted, then flagged.
- yorwba 2y agohttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43482227 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43482227 is too long, doesn't focus on the important points, goes out of its way to antagonize the audience, isn't backed up by links to the original material, and given how quickly you posted it, I doubt you wrote all of it yourself. I would've downvoted and flagged it too. Certainly there's lots of people on HN who vote in accordance with their ideology, but the number of ideologies is very large, so on most issues the deciding voting block are people who have no preexisting opinion, but want to see quality content. If you post low-quality comments, you stand no chance, no matter your ideological alignment. That's why https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43480681 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43480681 was also flagged.
- chin2chang 2y agoGood text always long. I post new text.

- suraci 2y agoLOL, this is not gonna work, just give up, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere btw i submitted the original video here weeks ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43316936 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43316936 sadly it is not discussable, hi @yorwba, can you please explain the difference between flagged and be restricted to discuss?
- yorwba 2y agoHN discussions have a time limit after which nobody can reply anymore. Also, in the YouTube comments, of three people trying to point to the timestamp of the girl saying 我和我妈妈一起来玩儿的 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlKxBTLrvCY&t=4110s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlKxBTLrvCY&t=4110s one actually manages to do so, fully restoring my faith in humanity.
