You get the pre-Lion behavior back. For TextEdit you additionally have to disable autosave so you don't get error messages: defaults write -app textedit Autos

For TextEdit you additionally have to disable autosave so you don't get error messages:
defaults write -app textedit AutosavingDelay -int 0
