Plenty of people with jobs they hate were dead inside long before mobile phones were invented -- they were addicted to alcohol instead. People levied the same complaints you're making about newspapers and books. Instead of painting any technology or distraction with a broad brush, it's best to focus on the potential harms and find out who's most impacted.
