From the release notes: "Fully open-source release of model weights"
However: "The Instella-3B models are licensed for academic and research purposes under a ResearchRAIL license."
Their ResearchRAIL license is not an Open Source license, as it includes usage restrictions, violating clause 6 of the Open Source Definition:

Don't tolerate this abuse of language. Instella-3B is "weights available", by analogy to "source available" software:

- observationist 2y agoYet another corporate open-washed PR stunt of a release, lawyers and MBA middle management types thinking they can get away with some sneaky shit. The intent is advertising, and in this case, selling AMD gpus, and has nothing to do with providing an actual Open Source project or product. They could invest in fixing their software offerings and compete with nvidia on the merits of their product, but they dropped the ball, even running an own-goal or two in the last several years. This is similar to freeware. They could use actual open source licenses, like Apache or MIT, BSD, or hell, even some flavor of GPL, but the license they provided is hot garbage. AMD doesn't get to reinvent the meaning of "Open Source" when it's convenient to their corporate goals.
