- belter 2y agoSome will take your comment as irony, but he has a Phd in Electrical Engineering from UIUC and I would trust him more than an MBA. "In a leaked recording, Amazon cloud chief tells employees that most developers could stop coding soon as AI takes over" - https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-ceo-developers-stop-coding-ai-takes-over-2024-8 https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-ceo-developers-stop-codi... ""If you go forward 24 months from now, or some amount of time — I can't exactly predict where it is — it's possible that most developers are not coding," said Garman, who became AWS's CEO in June. "Coding is just kind of like the language that we talk to computers. It's not necessarily the skill in and of itself," the executive said. "The skill in and of itself is like, how do I innovate? How do I go build something that's interesting for my end users to use?" This means the job of a software developer will change, Garman said."
- dartos 2y agoThat last quote hurt me so much. If that’s my job, why do I have no influence on the product? What’s the point of product managers?
- anticorporate 2y ago> What’s the point of product managers? Many of us have been asking this for years. Including those of us who have been product managers.
- belter 2y agoCan you imagine the CEO of the lead cloud provider telling his Developers: "Coding is just kind of like the language that we talk to computers. It's not necessarily the skill in and of itself"
- dartos 2y agoYeah, they do it all the time. they’re talking at the devs, but really talking to the market, since their job is partially to pump their own stock price. You can’t believe public CEO statements.
- toyg 2y agoLol, I'm a junior PM and I have the same question - in the end, developers tend to do whatever the fuck they want anyway...
- dartos 2y ago> developers tend to do whatever the fuck they want anyway Can you get me a job where you work? Everywhere I’ve worked in the past 10 years as a developer, I’ve had 0 ability to do whatever the fuck I want.
- toyg 2y agoLol, nice try, I have enough self-running devs... I guess it's a cultural thing. Our CEO and CTO still commit code every other week (occasionally driving us mad), it's still a very bottom-up org despite having thousands of people now.
- csomar 2y agoThat's the CEO of AWS. At this rate, in 24 months china is going to take over the software industry despite their significant lag compared to the US.
- pjmlp 2y agoPeople love to throw jabs at one of the companies that happens to be a champion of patents per year, and also responsible keeping the lights on for many critical projects on the Linux ecosystem since 1998.
- dijit 2y agoWe like to shit on IBM, but they dominated many industries when they tried. IBM pushed Linux very hard and contributed significantly to it's adoption- it would be revisionist to think otherwise. They also created quite literally legendary laptops, before deciding that they didn't want to and then moved on. I mean, their stock is not hurting as much as we think of them as a relic of the past: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/IBM/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAARSrXSbPLE1Em1YaTKY_aSO4FoKH7KPDV5GoS1TO_FzdI1k-JlMSKk_pIKSsqUFI4qdaJNGm3eNUOdquRJF8RajWQWa90BAq_Bkg9XjGiuK3UpLMC5zKNSPd0B9B0IyeyfWTMK5a23zrd0B4r93u8wdtZZcVdyWs7qnE3U13eRG https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/IBM/?guccounter=1&guce_refer...
- toyg 2y agoThey also were pioneers of modern industrial practices. They researched the best approaches to workforce scalability, settling on a model of many distributed offices spread around cheap peripheral suburbs - something that might sound banal today, but it in the 60s/70s, when even factories were supposed to be as close as possible to downtown, it was pretty bold. IBM has many shortcomings but they did manage to survive and navigate a century of tumultuous technological changes. Very few companies have done that.
