Neal Stephenson's Anathem had a thing called "bogons" which were purposely misleading datasets. Apparently the https://anathem.fandom.com/wiki/Reticulum https://anathem.fandom.com/wiki/Reticulum was full of them, you basically had to have a specialist along for the ride if you wanted to hook into the version which wasn't a lie. It thematically relevant to the story, but it was never explained how they got there.
I've been looking for a plausible explanation. I think I just found it.
- pavel_lishin 2y agoI've been thinking about Anathem, and specifically that part of it - the Artificial Inanity programs, the bogons, the alluded-to war on the Ret - a lot ever since AI text generation really took off. It reminds me a bit of Watts' Maelstrom, too, although we're not there. (Yet. And hopefully never.)
