EU Consumer Protection – Key Principles on In-Game Virtual Currencies [pdf]

- numpad0 2y agoSounds rational, but is it enforceable? For context, a lot of mobile games use reloadable prepaid balance systems with made-up units for payments; golds, gems, latinum, whatever. Conversion ratios are artificially made ambiguous and obfuscated by discounts and gift credits. In addition to in-game merchandises purchasable only by in-game units, many games also offer items and subscriptions available only in out-of-game real currencies. IIUC, these systems primarily exist to bypass computer-enforced Apple Laws regulating purchases made on the feudal Apple Land, such as laws requiring merchandises to be registered and approved before sales, or laws forbidding cross-platform balance mobility, than simply as anticonsumerist deception tactics. Are they finally going after platformers fabricating and enforcing undemocratic yet strongly enforced laws on mobile app markets?
