Apple Might Be Having Its Windows Vista Moment, Says Analyst
- duxup 2y agoVision seemed more like an experiment that … you could / everyone did just avoid. I don’t see it as a vista thing.
- taylodl 2y agoIn this case Apple shipped a demo, and I recall their being pretty up-front about that. They were selling the opportunity to "shape the future." Turns out, for the overwhelming majority of the users, that future doesn't include wearing big, clunky goggles.
- duxup 2y agoIt was interesting as VR has been fighting that fight and losing forever. But this wasn’t VR… and then it seemed to have even less reason to exist.
- fxtentacle 2y agoNo, they were selling the opportunity to try out your future prison cell. I would have absolutely loved the Apple Vision Pro hardware if I had had enough access to the actual hardware to use it how I see fit. But Apple was not even willing to grant the minimum of hardware access needed to stream SteamVR games onto the device. Every cheap chinese VR headset grants you that level of access ... but the mighty Apple refused. And that's why the thing was basically dead on arrival. It was super expensive hardware with incomplete software and NO !!! possibility for the open source community to alleviate the glaringly obvious software issues. Plus, why would any developer invest into an ecosystem where you already know the mafia is ruling and taking a 30% cut on your entire revenue? Why not invest somewhere else and pocket 30% in additional profits?
- taylodl 2y agoHow are these issues specific to the Vision Pro? With regards to StreamVR, are you saying VR gaming is the most significant use case for a VR headset and since the Vision Pro didn't include it at launch it missed the boat?
- fxtentacle 2y agoSteamVR is the most significant API for cross-platform VR development. Imagine launching a web browser without JavaScript support. It would work in theory, but be pretty useless in practice.
- anshumankmr 2y agoNever understood the hate for Vista...ran fairly smoothly for me back then but then I was 10 so maybe my opinion isn't gonna be as informed.
- duxup 2y agoFor me early on in the Vista experience it was a lot of cheese moving with half done new UI, and then things not where you want to find them. Also what seemed like a lot of unexpected system prompts related to permissions / security that didn't explain why you were seeing it... It worked, but felt like I was boxing my computer at times.
