I'm just having a hard time drawing a clear line of degree compared to lies that were said during Covid.
2 or 3 weeks to stop the spread, masks don't help, masks to help, just 2 shots and we're done, etc. That doesn't even get into the more technical lies spread with regards to how similar viruses work, or how the vaccines were actually tested and what was and wasn't known with high likelihood.
The lies Trump and his people often share are themselves pretty big lies, and often very easy to see they're wrong. It gets harder though when lying about NASA may change how future space travel is regulated or whether its don't with public or private money. Lying during a pandemic may kill people, both immediately and in the economic aftermath.
- bryanlarsen 2y agoThose weren't lies, they were hypotheses spread and acted on based on incomplete information in an environment where time was of the essence. Yes, some of them were wrong and mistakes were made. A far bigger mistake would have been to do nothing and wait for complete information.
- _heimdall 2y agoThey were not said by politicians and hypotheses, they were said as fact. You'd be hard pressed to find a clip of Biden, for example, leaving any noticeable room for the unknown when talking about vaccine efficacy or what would happen as long as we all complied. 100% agree about not waiting for complete information, that doesn't exist in science. Its all about informed consent though - inform the public of what is known and unknown and allow them to choose for themselves.
- triceratops 2y ago> what would happen as long as we all complied. Maybe the problem was we didn't all comply.
- _heimdall 2y agoI'm not even raising the question of whether they were right, only that the claims were based in hope rather than sound scientific findings.
- bryanlarsen 2y agoNot sure about Biden, but it's certainly easy to find Fauci clips "leaving noticeable room for the unknown".
- _heimdall 2y agoWhen in Congress and under oath, sure. Fauci was often claiming efficacy of the vaccines with regards to transmissibility which simply wasn't studied. He also made plenty of claims regarding herd immunity that he later acknowledged knowing at the time weren't accurate and were made mainly to convince the public to comply.
