Of course Europeans won’t ever ship a phone or OS —. By the time they have it ready for market and pass all of the EU’s rules, regulations, and pay all of the various taxes, fees — we’ll all be dead.
Honest question: why doesn’t the EU have their own FAANGs?
- ChocolateGod 2y agoNothing is European As was Nokia, and it wasn't regulations that kept them back, it was a Canadian.
- tellarin 2y agoWell, there was a Canadian competitor company, and then a Canadian CEO...

- thomassmith65 2y agoPretty sure it was mainly iPhone. Blackberry did well selling to the business market, but, at its height, Nokia was so popular in the consumer market that the risk wasn't existential. Today, of course, consumers all have iPhones or Asian smartphones.
- thomassmith65 2y agoWhy don’t some Europeans get together and make a phone and OS? Access to the EU market is voluntary. Apple only needs to abide by EU regulations if it wants access to that market. Of course Europeans won’t ever ship a phone or OS —. History didn't start in 2008 with iPhone. For the previous decade American mobile was - without exaggeration - backward (CDMA, no portability, cost prohibitive SMS). Meanwhile in Europe: Siemens, Ericsson, Nokia... why doesn’t the EU have their own FAANGs? A big factor is that the EU is less comfortable with extreme poverty. This allows the US and China essentially to undercut the EU. A more complicated factor is culture. While European business culture isn't aggressive enough to succeed in the current era, the flip-side is it does have a reputation for great design and high quality.
- tellarin 2y agoThe funny thing is that all FAANGs have big European subsidiaries, and specially so for their research labs. Also, they always buy any promising new European company (and many times even keep their original offices open in Europe). If things in Europe are so bad, I wonder why?
- jmorenoamor 2y agoRelax mate, nobody is forcing Apple. They can just choose not to sell here, freely.
- hulitu 2y ago> Typical EU. Why don’t some Europeans get together and make a phone and OS? Because theCIA doesn't love hardware/OSs it can't control.
