I think people focuses too much on how slavery was bad for the slaves and not enough on how slavery being profitable for slave owners is bad for society. If slavery is too profitable for the slave owners then it makes it too tempting to create new forms of slavery, create slavery like conditions, or to re-create slavery in all but name. It also means that slavers can potentially out compete legitimate businesses that service the same market, which makes slavery a better business strategy. If only criminals can be slaves, then it seems like there is strong alignment with passing laws that criminalize increasingly benign behavior, such as weed use. Slave labor further divorces the relationship between productive output and compensation, which entrenches the power of those in positions of power.
