MTA to Sunset MetroCard Sales at End of the Year
- dlcarrier 2y agoHow is a magstripe system $20 Million a year more expensive to operate than an NFC system? The electronics themselves cost about the same to make. Is this matter of escaping vendor lock-in?
- supertrope 2y agoThe article states that’s the cost to keep running MetroCard in parallel, not that MetroCard costs more to run than OMNY. > By eliminating the sale of MetroCard and fully transitioning to one fare collection method, the MTA expects to save at least $20 million annually in costs related to MetroCard production and distribution; vending machine repairs; and cash collection and handling.
- owl_vision 2y agoIs the smart link card still working in NYC and PATH? https://www.pathsmartlinkcard.com/ https://www.pathsmartlinkcard.com/ This cost a one time purchase of $5 and then the refill with either trips or money. That was working better than metrocard. edit: PATH is from Newark Airport,NJ to 34th Street Penn Station, Manhattan.
