Bluesky made more money selling T-shirts mocking Zuckerberg than custom domains
- dtagames 2y agoIrrelevant and sounds like a personal attack. They're not in the business of selling domains. They're making a platform for social apps.
- jazzyjackson 2y agoSelling domains is the only revenue model they've offered as far as I know. if they have no intention of making money I'm really curious how they got funding from VCs. https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-business-plan https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-business-plan
- dtagames 2y agoI thought this was a good question for ChatGPT's "deep research," so I asked it to give a breakdown of their corporate structure and profit requirements [0]. I think the result was pretty informative. Took 11 minutes and consulted 24 sources to complete. The TL;DR is that they are a public benefit corporation and have to balance that benefit (decentralized public communication platforms) with profit. - gnabgib 2y agoRelated Bluesky quickly sold out of the T-shirt its CEO wore to troll Mark Zuckerberg (85 points, 5 days ago, 85 comments) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43366210 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43366210

- Tsiklon 2y agoMore people are capable of buying T-shirts than have the understanding to buy and operate their own domain. This doesn’t seem like a surprise to me.

- pipeline_peak 2y agoLet me know when Bluecry is actually adopted by the masses. T shirts don’t fund social media platforms
- yellowapple 2y agoWhat are your criteria for "adopted by the masses"? I'm on there regularly and it seems lively enough.

- ilrwbwrkhv 2y agoLmao zuckerberg thinks he is Caesar because he runs a website and made hot or not? Bullying nerds should never have completely gone away.
- jazzyjackson 2y agoBullying nerds is how you get anti social billionaire supervillains.
- ZeroGravitas 2y agoDidn't he just copy hot or not but for college girls he was physically located near? https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2003/11/4/hot-or-not-website-briefly-judges/ https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2003/11/4/hot-or-not-webs... Also, weird to see the generic term "facebook" used in that 2003 Harvard news article.
- rsynnott 2y agoCould be worse; Musk appears to be a _Sulla_ fanboy (Sulla’s major contribution to history was originating, or at least popularising, the charming Roman tradition of proscription, where you just make it legal to murder your enemies.) A somewhat less successful dictator than JC, but a significantly nastier one.
- redserk 2y agoThis seems like a fun way to monetize the platform, especially if they aren’t running ads. I’d imagine it’s easier convincing people to buy fun swag than to persuade people to sign up for a subscription tier or throw money into a donation jar.
- mary-ext 2y agoTo be fair, Bluesky hasn't done a great job advertising the fact that you can buy domains from them. It's not even promoted in the app, they only promoted it in a blog post and then never again. https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-namecheap https://bsky.social/about/blog/7-05-2023-namecheap
- rsynnott 2y agoI mean, hardly surprising; the sort of people who want to use a custom domain with Bluesky generally will have a favoured registrar anyway, and will just use that instead of bluesky’s one.
