Enshittification as a Matter of Taste
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- duxup 2y agoI'm going to try to use the term "eshittification" somehow, but I find it increasingly random in terms of how it is used. The common denominator in most cases of "eshittification" is a product or service that was offered at below or no cost. Users seem to demand that price point. So once the product has a critical mass of users it eventually has to make money and the process begins. At this point we (as internet users) seem to insist on this process occurring over and over as we seem to favor free things ...

- ezekg 2y agoI used the word in conversation with my wife a few months back when she was complaining about the UX of a website she was trying to use. She had a good chuckle and now she uses the term every once in awhile.
- duxup 2y ago“These pretzels… eshittification.”
- supertrope 2y agoIntroductory pricing and service quality is a time honored marketing method. I’m still waiting to see if free news will collapse as a phenomenon. It’s hard to pay journalists and editors off $1/user/year in revenue from surveillance capitalism ads.
- duxup 2y agoMost "introductory pricing" I run into a is a lot more structured. But even so... doesn't matter, users by their choices "want" or encourage this system :(
- ezekg 2y ago> But when the website adds a fifth, seventh, twelfth ad… I know a person who lacks taste is at the wheel. I can feel it in my bones when an app or website has prioritized revenue over user experience. A person without taste or high emotional intelligence broke the unspoken contract we had built on mutual respect. Totally agree i.r.t. a clear lack of mutual respect these days, obviously to the detriment of the user. I was nodding along the whole post. Not sure if there's a way to prevent enshittification, but maybe that's okay and somebody else will just come along to unshittify whatever it is and restart the cycle. Aside: I was trying to recall where I knew the name Dave Rupert from and then saw he's the host of ShopTalk [0]. I listed to that podcast on the drive home all the time during my early career.
