i guess 'fetch --prune' deletes non-existent remote branches from local, but the not the remote branches that actually exist.
while the above is used to delete remote branch locally which also exists in remote. this is mostly helpful when you are working in a large codebase(maybe a monorepo) which has lot of branches. so doing a `git pull` which fetches all branches is very expensive and time consuming compared to pulling only a single branch.
