You don’t get to leave Tesla out of discussion of Elon. For better or worse, Elon spent a decade being the figurehead of Tesla, basically making Tesla==Elon. He owes the majority of his wealth to the company, and a lot of that wealth is due to an inflated stock that is based almost entirely on his cult of personality vs. the fundamentals of the company.

Tesla has also ultimately provided him with the funding he’s used to threaten US politicians with funding their opponents in upcoming primaries if they fail to fall in line. Tesla is where most of this money comes from. He’s spent time taking credit for Tesla’s successes. He doesn’t get to separate his personality from the company when it’s suddenly convenient to do so.
