The Trump administration is similarly trying to purge / stifle academic institutions and bend them to their uses.
For example, the Trump administration has told Columbia to dissolve specific academic departments. See this earlier discussion:

The US and Turkish governments are operating under the same authoritarian rules of engagement, it's just that the Turks are further along the trajectory.
- trentnix 2y agoLess than a year ago multiple States attempted to remove Trump from the Presidential ballot. That’s the closer analogue to the shenanigans in Turkey, not the attempted equivalence you’re trying to make.
- matthewdgreen 2y agoAnd they were blocked from doing so. Despite at least having a more reasonable case rooted in the actual text of the UE constitution.
- kibwen 2y agoRefusing to accept that you lost an election and then attempting an insurrection to overthrow the candidate that you lost to isn't quite the same thing.
- chrisco255 2y agoJ6 wasn't the first protest Washington D.C. has ever seen, but it was somehow the first they allowed to get out of hand.
- CalChris 2y agoYes, Trump refusing to send in the DC Guard could be considered allowing it to get out of hand.
- chrisco255 2y agoThe mayor of DC is in charge of DC's guard, and Trump did request their presence, but the mayor failed to abide the request.
- CalChris 2y agoThis is a lie.
- acdha 2y agoThis is a blatant lie: Trump resisted sending the national guard and the Mayor of DC had to ask Virginia and Maryland for police assistance. Ultimately Pence pushed the Pentagon to respond, and he’s never been forgiven for it. https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/06/politics/pence-national-guard/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/06/politics/pence-national-guard...
- CalChris 2y agoYes, and "The Commanding General of the D.C. Army National Guard is subordinate solely to the President of the United States". https://dc.ng.mil/Join-the-DC-National-Guard/DC-Army-National-Guard-Recruiting/ https://dc.ng.mil/Join-the-DC-National-Guard/DC-Army-Nationa...
- kibwen 2y agoDon't worry, Trump pardoned all his cronies, so it won't be the last.
- chrisco255 2y agoBiden pardoned his whole family, from what do you think they were gullilty of?
- somenameforme 2y agoI love how these things always turn into a game of telephone. That link, which links to something else, does not say what you claim it does. The most egregious is the General Service Administration requiring that Columbia place one department under academic receivership (which is nothing like dissolve) for 5 years, in order to continue receiving federal funding. Columbia notably is also a private Ivy League university with an endowment in the tens of billions of dollars whereas at stake is apparently up to ~$0.4 billion of Federal funding. If Columbia feels the demands are unjust and wanted to legally challenge them or even take a stand on values, they could do so extremely comfortably.
- psychlops 2y agoColumbia university can do whatever it wants. However, if they want to take free money from the federal government then they have to jump through more hoops. That article you reference says nothing about dissolving academic departments. Perhaps you are referring to academic receivership.

A direct quote from the letter the Feds sent Columbia reads: MESAAS Department – Academic Receivership. Begin the process of placing the Middle East, South Asian, and African Studies department under academic receivership for a minimum of five years. The University must provide a full plan, with date certain deliverables, by the March 20, 2025, deadline. The NY Times article provides a directed link to the PDF of the letter. Awaiting your retractions doubters...
