GPS Spoofing and Jamming: 310k Flights Spoofed in 2024 [pdf]
- figuetbe 2y agoIn 2024 alone, over 310,000 flights were affected by GPS spoofing, with peaks of 1,500+ flights per day. The rise of large-scale spoofing events in conflict zones, combined with isolated cases in unexpected locations (e.g., Hong Kong during a political event, Serbia during protests), shows how aviation navigation is becoming increasingly vulnerable to electronic interference. Aviation has relied on GPS for decades, but modern aircraft now depend on satellite signals for navigation, terrain avoidance (EGPWS), approach procedures (RNP), and even communication (CPDLC datalink sync). When these signals are jammed or spoofed, the results range from minor deviations to severe flight safety risks, such as nearly entering restricted airspace or receiving false terrain warnings. A notable case in December 2024 involved an Azerbaijan Airlines flight losing both GPS receivers in a conflict zone, forcing a high-risk diversion after multiple failed approaches. This paper provides real-world data on where and how GPS spoofing happens, based on ADS-B data from the OpenSky Network.
