Oh we have in recent memory that's what happened to Russia when the Soviet union fell. Parts were sold out to private parties, and the population learned unregulated capitalism is no better solution than power abused communism. The US is not quite there yet, but frankly them looking at parts of the US gov to shut down so they can be replaced by private services is not so far.
