The "fall" of Elon is truly a testament to just how fast and effective the alt-right neo-nazi pipeline is. I think it would be a mistake to read the situation as anything other than else. He's so deep into the world he's stopped realizing just how not normal his words and actions are to the people outside it. He is exactly the demographic they target— an insecure middle-aged white man with unexplained unease and discomfort related to his identity and masculinity. And the fact that Elon is generally fairly intelligent only makes their job easier. Being smart, especially when it becomes part of your self-image, doesn't stop you from taking on bad ideas, it just makes you better a defending them to yourself.
It's really disappointing to see the guy who was your normal cringy self-important tech guy but putting his money into genuinely cool stuff get addicted to social media and sucked into a cult because of it. It's hard to square what he's done and will go on to do— the people he has and will hurt, with the fact that he's also a victim of it. A real life tragic character I suppose.
