This youngster hasn't yet learned an important lesson - what they're experiencing is not an anomaly and there's no magical place where everybody was doing everything absolutely "right" - or if they were, they're now out of business.
Methodologies change. Technology stacks change. Thoughts about what is "right" change. Codebases are in a constant state of flux and usually are a mishmash of all these changes. But it works. Even when you decide to rationalize your applications, you can't do everything at once, and in the process of rationalizing your application portfolio the methodologies and technology stacks continue to change. Your application portfolio therefore is never thoroughly "modern."
