This reduces but does not eliminate traffic to the root servers. One must still get the NS records for the 2nd level domain one is requesting and without running one of the anycast root DNS servers one would not have this. That is a lot more data. That cached data can be seen in Unbound with
unbound-control dump_infra
I hold onto these records longer by increasing the infra cache settings in Unbound and have a cron job that refreshes them hourly.
