In R there is a way to turn on double-buffering in Cairo to make things fast - eventually so went for R-inside-orgmode where graphics are written to pngs (fast) and then displayed inside Emacs (fast over X forwarding so long as you aren’t trying to smooth-scroll with an image half-visible in the current window).
