HP has always (after the Compaq merger) had unethical people running the company. I stopped buying their printers after LaserJet4. I did however have one of their DDS4 tape drives that I had paid over $1k for, about 25 years ago. I stupidly updated the firmware shortly after the warranty period was over, and then immediately noticed a new loud pinging sound whenever it loaded or ejected the cartridge. It died within a few days of the upgrade, and I always suspected that HP had deliberately killed it. I bought a refurbished unit from them for another big chunk of money, because I was locked into the media platform.
I haven't bought an HP product since.
- seoulbigchris 2y agoI had a LaserJet III that lasted forever, like over ten years. It just wouldn't die.
- einr 2y agoI took a LaserJet 4050 (introduced 1997, I think ours might have been made in 1999) out of service (active, networked office use) just a couple of years ago. Not because it stopped working, because it still printed like nobody's business, but just because it was surplus to requirements. I believe this was just about the last generation of LaserJet that was Actually Good.
- seoulbigchris 2y agoI also just remembered, these things had option slots. Which I had to use on my III, because I needed more memory to print many kinds of documents / images (I vaguely remember it may have been for printing from AutoCAD). Can't remember a modern printer having add-on circuit boards these days.
