- JumpCrisscross 2y agoThank you. Flagged. “…please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait; don't editorialize.” https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- hn_acker 2y agoI could not use the original title to fit the 80 character limit, and instead I used the "parsely" title in the HTML source. That is, I used the short title that is part of the official metadata. In this case, the short title was very close to the original title, so I did not editorialize. I also think that neither title is misleading. I do my "the original title is" and "the full title is" schtick to let people in a hurry immediately compare the titles without flipping back and forth (and to make the original title searchable in the Algolia comments filter, because I can't include the original title in the stories filter for obvious reasons). I chose to use the word "normal" instead of "original" this time because there was an official alternative title available in the HTML, and now I understand that "normal" was misleading. I was also unwilling to write another sentence to explain what I meant by "normal", and in the future I will explain where I got the alternative title from instead of saying "normal title". I made an embarrassing and avoidable mistake this time, but editorializing was not it.
