Reading books is great! Wonderful technology that I continue to marvel at and benefit from, along with the public library system here in the USA.
I use a mix of Calibre and paper notes in a folder to track my reading, in part because I wouldn't pay for the privilege of tracking my reading when I am capable of using a pencil, and Calibre has columns and custom columns (priority, rating, notes, highlights). Coupled with NoDRM plugin (see mobileread forum) and never buying from Amazon (or using any Amazon product (Goodreads), or any other that gleans my usage behavior, as far as I understand it, anyway, and on balance with my goals), I'm confident my epubs are right where I left them, unaltered except by me (my child is legally blind but can read very large font, so stripping DRM and using KOReader on a Kobo ereader allows for large-enough text).
While reading is good, reading and acting on one's understanding is better. We're all mortal, so join the mess and share your knowledge, wisdom, and skills even as you gain more through books, up until your final paragraph (which in really good stories I tend to cover with my hand so I don't glance ahead).
If all I do is read, that's me being selfish and asleep at the wheel (or just along for the ride). I'd rather be awake and engaged, participating in democracy for as long as I'm able.
